Social Media Jobs for Communications Majors

The communications industry has a lot to offer in jobs and careers for those who study the major. With a degree in communications, one could work in any industry, in a number of versatile positions. One such job is working with social media. 

Those who choose to work in social media can work in a myriad of places. One could choose to work in a social media agency or company, big or small, where there would only be a focus of social media in multiple different roles, working with clients on their social media accounts. Other places to work include small businesses or agencies, corporations, nonprofits, the government, sports and the media. These areas of work don’t have a focus in social media, but maybe a few positions dedicated specifically to social media. Of course, one could always be self-employed, as a freelancer, and just offer their services to a client. 

Now, there are a lot of places and industries a person could work for in regards to social media, but there even more positions that one could be in. Here are some of the basic jobs in social media:

  • A social media manager focuses on representing the brand on social media.
  • A social media community manager advocates for the brand on social media.
  • A social media coordinator does the strategic planning and execution of social media campaigns.
  • A social media strategist focuses on a client’s goals and objectives for social media and finds the best ways to accomplish them 
  • Content creators design and produce work that speaks to audiences on social media
  • A multimedia video producer creates videography for social media, but can also have the responsibility of managing photography too. 
  • Social media content writers and editors write and edit the material being produced for social media, making sure they are consistent with the brand voice. 
  • Freelancers are paid to create specific pieces of work or work on specific projects for social media.
  • A social media consultant advises clients on social media campaigns and management.

These are just the basic job titles of some positions in social media. These positions could be called something different in each industry and could have different responsibilities.
